Sod, lawn, turf, grass... a dead zone?

Join conservation biologist and ecologist, Blaine Rothauser, in this virtual program to discover how America's focus on green lawns has created enormous expanses of property that severely limits biodiversity. He will also reveal some simple and affordable ways that we can all make a range of improvements to our homes and communities, no matter where they are located, and why this is important.

Blaine brings a passion for his home state of New Jersey's iconic natural history which he readily shares in this captivating program - a perfect match for all audiences and enhanced by his own professional photography.

Join us for our last virtual event with Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ, as we join the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey's special guest speaker, ecologist Blaine Rothauser, and learn all about 'The Green Smear'.

About Blaine Rothauser:

Blaine Rothauser, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, from Rutgers/Cook College. He is a Senior Natural Resource Specialist and Conservation Biologist with GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc., a nationally recognized environmental consulting firm. He is also a professional wildlife photographer whose images have graced the pages of natural history magazines, books, corporate reports and calendars. Blaine works extensively in New Jersey on conservation management planning and design, threatened and endangered (T&E) species analysis, regulatory permitting, bio-ecologic inventories, and environmental impact studies. In addition to 26 years as a professional ecologist, Blaine brings a passion for his home state’s iconic natural history which he readily shares in captivating and visually-rich presentations to everyone from corporate to community groups to students.

He is the owner, operator, and principal of BR Environmental, LLC since 2004, the chief biologist and naturalist of the environmental consulting firm, Thonet Associates, Inc. of Pittstown, NJ, as well as chairman of the Florham Park Environmental Commission, from 2008-2011. Of his many accomplishments during his tenure, he is most noted for spearheading the restoration of Spring Garden Lake, and a 5-acre land parcel now known as, "The Florham Park Conservation Management Area" - the Borough's first pocket park.

Through a wealth of knowledge working and volunteering with the NJDEP's Division of Fish and Wildlife (particularly the Endangered and Nongame Species Program),  Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ, and Watershed Associations, Mr. Rothauser has gained a firm grasp of New Jersey’s geography, biodiversity, and ecology. He has submitted over 75 rare-species reports that have been added to the state's database of the Natural Heritage Department- a Division of Parks and Forestry.

Mr. Rothauser is also a well-known natural history photographer in New Jersey. His images have graced the pages of books, magazines, newsletters, and informational material used by private, public, and non-profit purveyors of natural history, throughout the state. Mr. Rothauser lectures on a range of topics that help to sing the praises of New Jersey’s best kept secret – its Biodiversity!

About: Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey

New Jersey has a rich biodiversity that belies its small size and urban reputation. In every corner of our state, species of wildlife, considered rare and imperiled enough to be protected by state or federal law, are woven in to the tapestry of life in our state.

Rare wildlife species live, much like New Jersey residents, in the mountains of the north, the pastoral farmlands of central New Jersey, the bays and swamps along our coasts, as well as on skyscrapers, bridges, and at the edges of suburban subdivisions. These species live a challenged life where roads represent impenetrable obstacles, developments spell the demise of habitat, and contamination in wetlands can wipe out an entire generation.

It is our duty, and our privilege, to protect these species. We gather the best science-tried and true conservation techniques, innovative education activities, and an engaged corps of willing volunteers, in pursuit of the right combination of activities that will preserve a species before it disappears from our state; help another population recover or; highlight some bird, fish, mammal or insect that must be protected before it slides towards extinction.

Our mission is to preserve rare and imperiled species of wildlife that live and breed in, and migrate through New Jersey.

We do this by:

• Carrying out research on species, populations and natural communities.
• Implementing conservation plans on species or populations to stall declines and start recovery.
• Restoring habitat so that it can be as productive as possible for wildlife and other natural communities.
• Educating everyone who lives in New Jersey about our shared wild heritage and our shared responsibility to protect it.
• Engaging partners to make us effective and efficient in the use of our resources.
• Developing a committed corps of volunteers connected to our state’s wonderful biodiversity and working hard to protect it.

CWF VISION:
We are looking, and working, towards a future where New Jersey is home to greater numbers of rare species, stronger populations and enough good habitat to support them
