Join the Community History Committee from the Center for Community Arts (CCA) as they present an overview of the Cape May African American Heritage Walking Tour from the comfort of the Library. Hidden in plain sight among Victorian Cape May are stories of Blacks-only beaches and USO, the thriving African American businesses, the social and religious community and the segregated Franklin Street School.
Center for Community Arts’ Community History Program is dedicated to discovering, preserving and presenting the African American history of Cape May County. The Committee administers the John T. and Janet “Dolly” D. Nash African American History Archives now housed at the Cape May Library Branch in the Historic Franklin Street School. They used the archive to author their book Black Voices of Cape May: a Feeling of Community, create annual exhibits and the Underground Railroad Tour in partnership with Cape May MAC, present African American Heritage Walking Tours during Cape May’s tourist season and by appointment, develop a 10-stop self-guided audio tour, contribute to the addendum of Cape May Historic District, and assist State and Cape May City governments and area organizations.
